I met him once. Way back in 1985, I was having an art show at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, NJ. He was there because he had some horses racing. He stopped by my display of paintings, picked up one of my business cards and saw that I was from Elyria.
He said to me:
"Oh, your close to Lorain."
I told him that Lorain was my ...hometown, and that I personally knew the guy who [at that time and I think his last name was Ashby] was overseeing the shutdown of the shipyards that he owned there, because I was teaching his wife art lessons.
He had a laugh, we chatted about something else for a minute, some other people stopped by and dragged him away, and that was that....

I met him once. BAck in the early 1970's I was employed by Lorain Parks and Recreation on summer break and home from college.(BGSU) There was a special olymipic styled event at Geroge Daniel Stadium for the children who participated in the summer park program run by Miriam Snyder. I am not sure what role George Steinbrenner played. He may have donated funding or support from American Ship on some level. However, I knew that he was an important man and followed his career after he left Lorain. I did have my picture taken with him that summer day in 1971 by one of the other park supervisors.
